Franz H. Schmidt was born 1927 in Neu-Isenburg, Germany, and has resided in Canada since 1952. A successful importer and designer of Scandinavian furniture, Schmidt found solace in his fine art practice. A prolific and dedicated artist, Schmidt produced over 7,000 pieces of art throughout his lifetime, and explored many mediums including acrylic, oil, watercolour, reversed glass, sand painting, fibre art, and sculpture.

The evolution of Schmidt-Isenburg's style and technique has been characterized by a progression from soft pictorial works to more subtle impressionist approaches. He calls it Psychicism — the employment of the subconscious to assist the conscious mind in expressing mood, vibration, the awareness of the present, the past and the future of human doings.

His work has been shown in many solo and group exhibitions since the 1970s, and his art has found its way into many collections in Canada, the United States, and Europe.
